Bison swim recruit Kelsey Wog wins women’s 200m breaststroke at 2016 Canadian Swimming Championships in Edmonton

Wog captures event title in first day of four day meet that ends on August 7

At the 2016 Canadian Swimming Championships that runs from August 4-7 in Edmonton, Bison women's swimming recruit Kelsey Wog started the national event with an impressive win on day one on Thursday, August 4.

Wog, 17, won the women's 200m breaststroke by .003 of a second as she captured the event title in a time of 2:27.21. In the 2015 national swimming championships, she won both the 100 and 200m breaststroke events.

Wog commented to Swimming Canada after the championships win, "My goal was just to have a solid race and race, not just swim. My experience from the past helps me know what I'm going into and stay focused and not get distracted."

The Winnipeg native, who will compete for the Manitoba Bisons in her rookie season at the university level in the 2016-17 season, has several other chances to medal and win during the four day national meet.

Wog is ranked first after the preliminary swim in the women's 50m breaststroke and the final occurs on Friday, August 5 night. In addition, Wog will also swim Friday night in the 200m freestyle final. On Saturday, August 6, Wog competes in the 200m individual medley (IM) and on the final day on Sunday, she has another chance to defend her national championships title in the women's 100m breaststroke.

Bison swim notes: After the 2016 Canadian Swimming Championships, Wog will be part of the National team for the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Championships that runs from August 24-27 in Maui, Hawaii. This will be her second National team selection for the Junior Pan Pacific Championships (In 2014 – Wog placed fifth in 100m and 200m breaststroke).
