In the second week of the 2015 Canada West football regular season, Manitoba Bisons first year running back/kick returner Jamel Lyles was selected Canada West Special Teams Football Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 13/15.
Lyles, 19, continues to impress in his first season. After capturing CIS and Canada West Offence Player of the Week honours in week one, Lyles responded with another electrifying game performance, this time on special teams.
In week two at home, the then #2 Calgary Dinos defeated the then #6 Bisons by a 46-38 score in an highly entreating, back-and-forth affair at Investors Group Field on Fri., Sept. 11.
Lyles made the home crowd jump to their feat as he took the opening kickoff and raced for an 107 yard kickoff return TD – establishing a new Bison record for longest kickoff return in program's history and tied for the third longest at the conference level.
In week two, Lyles also finished with 209 kickoff return yards on four returns for a whopping 52.3 average plus added 23 punt return yards on six attempts.
The Surrey, BC native was again a multi-purpose threat as he also added 82 rushing yards on 11 carries and in the home loss, he racked up 314 all-purpose yards.
Lyles is first in Canada West all-purpose yards at 563, second in kickoff return yards at 209, third in conference with 111 punt return yards and tied for fourth with 237 conference rushing yards after two games.
This is the second time that Manitoba Bisons football players has earned conference player of the week honours in 2015 season (week one: offence – Jamel Lyles).
