Women's hockey student-athlete Alanna Sharman has been named the Smitty's Bison Sports Female Athlete of the Week and football student-athlete david Onyemata has been named the Smitty's Bison Sports Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 19, 2014.
In women's hockey, the Manitoba Bisons went on the road and swept the Mount Royal Cougars over the Oct. 17-19 weekend.
During the road sweep, Manitoba rookie forward Alanna Sharman was instrumental in gaining the maximum six points for the team as she part of five of the seven goals scored by the Bisons over the two game series.
Sharman was named first star in both wins as scored four goals and one assist with a plus/minus rating of +5 along with four shots (all goals).
On Friday, October 17, the Winnipeg native scored twice and added an assist with a+3 rating in the 4-1 victory. The next day, 5'8" rookie added two more goals (one on the power play) with a +2 rating in the 3-1 win.
With the win, Manitoba is in a battle for first place in the Canada West standings as they now have a 4-1-1 record.
Sharman is tied for eighth in conference scoring and second in conference rookie scoring with six points (four goals and two assists).
The Bisons (4-1-1) return home to host the Lethbridge Pronghorns (1-0-5) on Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26. Both games held at Wayne Fleming Arena (U of Manitoba campus) and played at 1 p.m. CT.
Manitoba Bisons defensive tackle David Onyemata was a force in the middle of the front four as the defence neutralized the #8 Saskatchewan Huskies by a 41-8 score in football action on Friday, October 17 at Investors Group Field (U of Manitoba campus).
The third year player had arguably his best game of his Bison career as he created havoc throughout the contest by disrupting runs and pas plays by one of the top teams in the country.
Onyemata finished with 5.5 tackles (four solo) with one tackle for one yard loss. The 6'5", 310 lbs. veteran was a key component on a Bison defence that only allowed 200 total offence yards by the Huskies in the crucial home match.
The Lagos, Nigeria native set the tone early with 2.5 tackles in the first quarter when the game was still close. He added three more tackles in the third quarter.
Onyemata is tied for 22nd in total conference tackles at 24 and tied for sixth in Canada West with 3.5 tackles for losses in playing all six conference regular season games.
With the victory, Manitoba moves to 3-3 in the 2014 campaign and now faces the Regina Rams (1-5) on Saturday, October 25 at 3 p.m. CT.
